Yves Glimmer with Mini Welt Pillow 24" x 24"
Thread count is simply the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. It’s a common belief that “the higher the thread count, the better the sheet”, but that is not always the case. The most important factor to consider when purchasing sheets is actually how the fabric feels to YOU! Sheets are made of many types of materials: cotton, linen, bamboo, polyester, hemp, and various blends of these different yarn types. Choose a fabric that feels good against YOUR skin and you’ll enjoy getting into bed! If you prefer a softer sheet, Egyptian cotton and bamboo are a great choice. If you prefer a crisp sheet, a higher thread count cotton or polyester/cotton blends are in order. For those who prefer a natural textural feel, organic cotton, hemp and linen are great options. No matter what type sheet you choose, the softness and “feel” are what determine your satisfaction, not the thread count! Keep in mind, the higher the thread count, the less “breathability” of the fabric. In a warmer climate, a lower thread count sheet allows more air movement to help keep the body temperature regulated throughout the night. A higher thread count will keep you warmer in a colder climate...
Egyptian cotton was originally developed and cultivated in the fertile Nile valley in ancient Egypt...hence its name. Egyptian cotton refers to the actual variety of the cotton plant itself, and not where the cotton is actually grown—today much of the world’s Egyptian cotton is grown in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. Egyptian cotton is unique in that the cotton strands themselves are longer than other cotton types. This longer “staple” produces a stronger and softer yarn than shorter staple varieties, and lends itself to creating very comfortable sheets, towels, and clothing items.
It typically takes 5 to 7 days to get whatever fabric is chosen for a custom item, if the fabric is in stock. Once received, the fabric and custom work order are turned over to our workroom, where typical turnaround time is 10 days to 2 weeks. Keep in mind that the more complex the item, or the larger the project, the more time that will be required. Because we are located in a “seasonal” location, the turnaround times during the months of January through April are impacted due to the sheer amount of work being done...during these months turnaround times can reach 3 to 4 weeks. Some of our vendors also have custom or special order manufacturing guidelines, which can require up to 5 weeks for delivery. These turnaround times will be determined and communicated at the time the order is placed.
A platform bed skirt is the more traditional of the two styles of bed skirts—the bed skirt itself is sewn onto a fabric “platform” that is positioned flat, on top of the boxspring. The mattress is then placed on top of the platform to keep it in place. The “3-piece panel” is the newest addition to the bed skirt family, providing an easier way to attach and remove the bed skirt, while still maintaining a tailored look. The 3 pieces are individually attached to the box spring using T-pins or Velcro, eliminating the need to lift the mattress off the box spring, providing the ability to adjust bed skirt length as necessary, and allowing for a more consistent and uniform appearance.
After washing, we recommend drying your flat sheet and fitted sheet separately. This creates more room in the dryer, allowing each piece dry more quickly, with less twisting and knotting together, resulting in less wrinkling. Another tip to help reduce wrinkles: fold sheets immediately as they come out of the dryer, hand pressing them as you fold. Hand pressing helps the wrinkles simply “disappear” as the still warm fabric is folded. Finally, and most importantly, do NOT over-dry your sheets! Over drying “sets” the wrinkles in the item, making them harder to hand press or relax out...It’s actually best to remove sheets from the dryer and fold when there is still a slight hint of moisture remaining in the fabric. We do NOT recommend using fabric softeners or dryer sheets to reduce wrinkling—these items have chemical properties that can damage the fibers of the sheet over time, reducing their useful life.
There are two factors that contribute to shrinkage...NOT following the manufacturer’s washing instructions, and over-drying the item. To prevent shrinkage, follow the water temperature and wash cycle instructions on the label. When in doubt, use cold water to both wash and rinse, and utilize the delicate cycle on the washer. Using the high heat setting on the dryer is the number one cause of shrinkage...use the air-dry or tumble-dry settings, and never over dry the item. Also, keep in mind that not all items are machine washable...certain fabrics require dry cleaning and should never be machine washed. Read and follow all label directions, and feel free to call us if you have questions or concerns about proper washing and drying of your items.
Fabric from bamboo is becoming more and more common, and much more popular as people experience first-hand the benefits of bamboo fiber. Bamboo is fast-growing and requires no chemical fertilizer to thrive, making it a naturally “organic”, and earth-friendly fiber. Likewise, bamboo is anti-microbial in nature, making it a great choice for people who suffer from asthma or allergies. As an example, bamboo sheeting will repel dust mites making sleep easier and more restful for anyone with those sensitivities! Bamboo fabric is also strong and will provide years of use when cared for properly. Finally, bamboo has a very soft feel and resists wrinkling naturally...sheets made of bamboo will come out of the dryer virtually wrinkle free, and will get softer and more comfortable with every washing...much like your favorite pair of jeans! Likewise, towels made from a blend of bamboo and cotton will provide years of use, remain very absorbent, and get softer with each use!
